Day 18: CONI and Foro Italico 6-16-22

Today was an adventure; we saw the Foro Italico and met with people from the Italian Olympic committee. This all sounds cool, right? But one thing that was hard to miss was Mussolini. When we were walking near the stadium that hosts As Roma, there were mosaics on the paths. That seemed out of place to me; if Italy is trying to show their new reformed system, why might this be here. The only reason I could think of is to protect history, but that's not something you really want to preserve the history of. This artwork was even present in the pool area. Mussolini used sports as a distraction almost. He was seen as this disgrace but wanted to make people think, “Hey, I am a human too. I work out.”

Also, Mussolini was featured in a very questionable space on the Italian Olympic committee, where the Olympic committee president made his announcements. For TV cameras, that would be in the frame, making you feel concerned and out of place.  Today’s tour really proved the point that proved the point, that the media must cover both sides of the story when interpreting messages; you can’t just ignore something clearly seen behind you. But at the same time, the media had to be informed that if they talk about those messages, they may do unintended damage to society.

The meeting with the Italian Olympic Committee impressed me about today’s tour.  I am very interested in the behind-the-scenes of how things work. They discussed how they provide content and manage the athletes regarding press situations. As part of the Olympic committee, they must cover every athlete. Doing this helps audiences understand and learn about an athlete’s story.  At the end of the day, their overall mission is to build a better world through sport through excellence, friendship, and respect.  Nothing could be done without their incredible sponsors and broadcast partners.

Stay tuned for another blog tomorrow!
