Day 9: AFP. 6-7-22

Today, we got to visit the AFP (Agence France-Presse) offices, and right away, it was made clear that their mission is to provide news to platforms across the globe. They do this through multimedia, video, news, sports, fact writing, and more. But what makes them stand out from newspapers is that they are the ones who help distribute information to news companies, organizations, and even government officials. One department that they have is fact-checking. This is important for them because they have many different clients worldwide, and the minute they send out that piece of news, it's ready to be used by one of their clients across the globe. That means there’s even more pressure to not make a mistake. Fact check has been around for a while, but it has been made even more critical for journalists lately with the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. AFP’s audience ranges from people in Africa, Asia, North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. This is important because, with all their different audiences, they must communicate their different types of news so that clients can understand what they are discussing. A vital note they shared was that you always want to ensure you have two sources before you can do something; otherwise, it might be a little unreliable. One thing that comes out of this process is better reporting. The one thing they might not do as well as newspapers is picking a side because their job is to give only the facts. The AFP doesn’t have an opinion piece like newspapers do.

The newsroom (pictured down below) was interesting to see for me. Today, they watched press conferences and organized clips to find what they could use in their pieces. This sparked interest in me because I like looking at the behind-the-scenes of production.

In conclusion, it was cool to hear about a group like AFP. I’ve heard of the American AP press before but never really understood or appreciated what they did. That changed today. Until time, au revoir.
